These girls live in the same neighbourhood. They play together.
They play on the dust road. The road is old.
Mama doesn’t like this road. It has stones and holes.
The stones hurt people’s feet. The holes damage car tyres.

Rimwe zuva, Kudzai anoona tirakita huru pamugwagwa.
Amai vanoti tirakita idzi dzinonzi katapira.
Mugwagwa uri kugadzirwa.
One day, Kudzai sees big tractors on the road.
Mama says these tractors are called caterpillars.
The road is being repaired.

Mugwagwa weguruva unofukidzwa nezvinhu zvitema.
Amai vanoti zvinhu izvi zvinonzi tara.
Katapira dzinogadzira mugwagwa mutsva.
Mugwagwa mutsva hauna matombo. Mugwagwa mutsva hauna makomba.
The dust road is covered in a black substance.
Mama says this substance is called tar.
The caterpillars make a new road.
The new road has no stones. The new road has no holes.

Mugwagwa uyu unotsvedzerera. Mutema mupamhi. Mugwagwa wakanaka.
Amai vanofarira mugwagwa mutsva uyu.
This road is smooth. It is black and wide. It is a beautiful road.
Mama likes this new road.

Kudzai naAnna vanoda ishwa. Vanoenda kumugwagwa mutsva.
Vanobata ishwa nhatu chete!
Kudzai and Anna want to edible flying termites. They go to the new road.
They catch only three flying termites!

Kudzai and Anna want to play nhodo.

Mugwagwa mutsva hauna matombo!
The new road has no stones!

Kudzai anonetseka.
Mugwagwa mutsva unokuvadza ishwa here? Ishwa dzinofema sei?
Kudzai is worried.
Does the new road hurt the flying termites? How do the flying termites breathe?

Kudzai anojigimura pamugwagwa.
Mugwagwa mutsva wakasimba chaizvo!
Kudzai stomps on the road.
The new road is very strong!

Kudzai anoenda kuna Amai.
‘Rega kunetseka. Ishwa dzinowana nzira yekubuda nayo,’ vanodaro Amai.
Kudzai goes to Mama.
‘Do not worry. The flying termites will find a way out,’ says Mother.

Rimwe zuva mvura inonaya. Kudzai anomhanya kuna Anna.
‘Ishwa dzadzoka!’
One day it rains. Kudzai runs to Anna.
‘The flying termites are back!’

Mugwagwa wakasimba, asi ishwa dzakachenjera!
The road is strong, but the flying termites are clever!
